Community Building

"There are no such things as great deeds—only small ones done with great heart."
~ Mother Theresa

"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
~ President Barack Obama

"You see things, and you say “Why?” But I dream things that never were, and I say “Why not?”
~ George Bernard Shaw

Community Building

How Do You Build Community

Communities are stronger, safer and more sustainable when those who make up the community come together to discuss concerns, address problems and plan for change. To make positive changes communities can look at the strengths that are present in the community, an asset-based approach, and use those strengths to improve the community.

Women's Role in Community Building

Including women in community building is key to the success of a community.  Too often women are not included in community decision making.

Imagine what women who had survived violence, who had raised children, or who cared for the sick would say if they had a chance to express to others what their vision for the future would be. Now imagine that your community has an opportunity to hear from these women, to learn about their experience and to experience a vision of what the future could hold. Imagine if you could work with your neighbors to create a community that included this vision.

Women have different needs and different ways of interacting in the community.  Including women’s voice and vision for the future will help to strengthen the fabric of the community.
