About Us

Our Story

SpeakArtLoud, an all-volunteer non-profit organization, was founded by Sally Peters in 2009. SpeakArtLoud is based in Portland, Oregon.

Sally, driven by a strong desire to do meaningful work but uncertain of how to get started, began researching social entrepreneurship and community development ideas. In the fall of 2008 she discovered Springboard Innovation and immediately signed up to attend their Local Agenda NW workshop. Here, in this workshop, she learned how to begin to develop an innovative program that could address complex social problems with sustainable solutions. Working closely with others interested in social change, Sally was able to combine her passions for supporting women, building community and the arts into the idea behind SpeakArtLoud. Sally met Christa Sprinkle and Beth Gebstadt in the Local AgendaNW workshop, both of whom  later became founding board members of SpeakArtLoud.

Our Board

Director - Sally Peters had a transformational experience with art while looking at a Cézanne painting in an undergraduate art history class and since that time she has never looked at the world in the same way. Though not an artist herself, Sally enjoys most art forms and tries to visit a gallery, see live music, go to the theatre or do something crafty whenever she can.  Sally's professional background includes work in program development for non-profit and government organizations and she currently works as an analyst for the State of Oregon. In her free time Sally loves reading novels with her bookclub and traveling as often as possible.

Secretary - Christa Sprinkle is a long time advocate for women, with a professional background in serving women both as a mental health therapist and as a program manager. Since 2005 she has been interested in international development, particularly with the UN Millennium Development Goals’ related to women’s and children’s health and education. That, together with her participation as a delegate at the Skoll World Forum at Oxford University in 2006, has cemented Christa’s commitment to work on behalf of women and children. Christa has a passion for travel, painting, photography, writing and gardening. She is a grandmother who has two gorgeous and brilliant grandchildren who are the light of her heart!

Beth Treasurer - Beth Gebstadt has always been actively engaged, both professionally and voluntarily, in programs that support, advocate and promote the health and well-being of women, children and families. She currently serves as a policy analyst for the State of Oregon Maternial and Child Health section of the Public Health division. Beth is the proud mother of an adventurous kindergartner.  She and her daughter love to travel, cook, ski, read and play.

Our Volunteers

Volunteer - Jennifer Lucas works as a web site designer and project manager for a small company in Portland, Oregon.  She is helping SpeakArtLoud with website management, social networking and search engine optimization.
